2 June marks the 5th edition of Heat Action Day (HAD), a global day of action and awareness on extreme heat. In 2026, HAD’s theme is indoor heat. The event will mark Heat Action Day by highlighting best practices and scalable initiatives that can be replicated by local and regional governments around the world. Together, we can #BeatTheHeat.

The Global Cities Hub is at the forefront of linking LRGs and international organizations to address the most pressing challenges faced by urban centers worldwide. Engaged in a diverse array of initiatives, GCH fosters collaboration among cities,  mayors and city networks to strengthen inclusive multilateralism in the Geneva ecosystem, including the United Nations. Our work spans critical areas including environment and climate change, smart city development, protection of human rights, and promotion of urban health. By facilitating knowledge exchange and joint action, we aim to create sustainable, inclusive, and resilient urban environments for all.

Preparing the review of SDG11 at HLPF 2026

The Global Cities Hub hosted a workshop to discuss the SDG11 Synthesis Report ahead of the 2026 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF). This Synthesis Report is particularly important as it is the last review of SDG11 at HLPF. During the review of SDG11 at HLPF, local and regional governments will be there to defend the role of cities and regions in multilateralism.

AI-enabled citiverse: global policymaking and local realities

The 3rd UN Virtual Worlds Day discussed the concept of the AI-enabled citiverse, a digital paradigm integrating artificial intelligence (AI), immersive virtual environments, and spatial intelligence to transform urban governance and service delivery. Mayors and local leaders contributed with practical insights drawn from on-the-ground experiences in urban transformation.

Alternative lawmaking for new multilateralism: cities as co-creators?

The roundtable discussion on “Alternative lawmaking for a new multilateralism: cities as co-creators?” explored how LRGs could contribute more directly to international norm creation. It focused on whether evolving forms of international governance may open space for cities not merely as active co-creators of international norms.
