Geneva will host the second part of the fifth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop an international legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment (INC-5.2). INC-5.2 will be held from 5 August to 14 August 2025 at the Palais des Nations.
The LSNG Coalition has published a position paper ahead of the session, which highlights the crucial role of LRGs in fighting plastic pollution. It also underlines the shared hope for an ambitious treaty that, inter alia, addresses the issue of plastic production and consumption and ensures the environmentally sound management of waste.
The LSNG Coalition has advocated for negotiating Member States to maintain current language and strengthen the references to local and regional governments and to whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches. To facilitate work of Member States, the Coalition has drafted suggested language on the Chair’s Text of 1 December 2024 to further ensure that LRGs are considered key partners in the development and implementation of the treaty.
