City Directors of International Affairs Network

The German Marshall Fund (GMF), as an organization established with the mission of strengthening transatlantic cooperation and with a unique Cities program, helps advance the role of cities in addressing global challenges of our time, and for local level ties to be a source of resilience and endurance for the values and practice of transatlantic cooperation.

In 2020, GMF Cities created a network of and for City Directors of International Affairs (CDIAs) from Europe and North America. These city government professionals learn from and consult with each other, develop relationships and grow their network, coordinate activities, and get ideas and support quickly through this trusted network, which includes over 80 cities in more than 25 countries.

PRINCIPAL OBJECTIVES

  • Strengthen international cooperation and learning between cities on critical global issues
  • Build and improve capacities for city diplomacy in cities
  • Grow the trust among city officials and build their transatlantic network of peers
  • Share innovative practices and policies on common problems
  • Increase the recognition of the relevance of cities as international actors, as well as the benefits of their increased role in addressing global issues.

KEY PROJECTS

The GMF Cities team implements a number of projects and activities together with European and North American cities and local leaders to further and fortify democracy, promote social, economic, and climate justice, and to advance the role of cities in international relations.

As part of the GMF’s City Directors of International Affairs (CDIA) Network, participants are invited to closed-door virtual sessions on timely topics, regular in-person convenings, and professional development opportunities.
