GCH Annual Retreat

Building on its work during the year 2024, the GCH will hold an annual retreat with its current and future members and partners in order to reflect on the most effective ways to work with local and regional governments at the multilateral level, following the results of the two major events of the year: the United Nations Summit of the Future and the Forum of Mayors - Summit of Cities of the Future". We see an opportunity to strengthen the engagement of local and regional governments in United Nations intergovernmental bodies and processes.

Localizing humanitarian action: the essential role of local governments

From 28 to 31 October, Geneva hosted the 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent. Every 4 years, the ICRC, IFRC, all Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies and all States gather in Geneva to discuss the most pressing humanitarian issues and how to ensure principled humanitarian action.

On 14 November 2024,  during a Geneva Environment Network’s dedicate event, underscoring the role of the Plastic Pollution Treaty negotiation, in shaping sustainable global policy, the Local and Subnational Governments Coalition to End Plastic Pollution reaffirms its firm and constant commitment to supporting a strong Plastic Pollution Treaty. This treaty represents a vital opportunity for the global community to take decisive action against plastic pollution, and local and subnational governments are calling for their unique role to be formally recognized as integral to the Treaty’s success.

Multilateral city diplomacy event at the World Urban Forum

City diplomacy, which serves as leverage in international policies, must be recognized and integrated, not as a simple relay for centralized strategies, but as a way of adjustment and management of cooperation policies. On 7 November 2024 GCH organizes the “Multilateral city diplomacy in crisis situations: improving multilevel governance” discussion in cooperation with CUF and UCLG. The World Urban Forum (WUF) holds a pivotal role in inspiring multilateral fora to integrate LRGs into forward-thinking global decision-making processes.
