The mandate of the UN Forum of Mayors has been extended on 9 December 2024, as a UN standing body with a unanimous decision. In doing so, Member States of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) acknowledged that the Forum has successfully allowed Mayors to contribute to the work of the UN.

On 6 December 2024 GCH organized its Annual Retreat. This truly multi-stakeholder meeting offered a ‘safe space’ for an open-minded discussion among cities and regions’ representatives, their networks, States and international organizations. It contributed to a mutual understanding of what multilateralism could look like in the future and how to strengthen the work of the UN and other international organizations in Geneva and beyond.

Nairobi joins the Global Cities Hub, strengthening connections between local governments and international organizations. As a UN host city and home to UN-Habitat and UNEP, Nairobi will contribute to advancing urban development, environmental sustainability, and global governance.

On 12 December 2024, Global Cities Hub and International Telecommunication Union signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize and pursue their successful cooperation. The purpose of this MoU is to contribute to advancing the participation and engagement of Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) in multilateralism, especially in digitalization, smart cities and AI governance and all related topics and processes.

The rapid urbanization of the global population, with over 4.4 billion people currently residing in cities, has intensified challenges related to waste management. As cities expand, the generation of municipal wastewater, solid waste (both organic and inorganic fractions), and greenhouse gas emissions increases significantly.
