This Geneva Urban Debate (GUD) aims to raise awareness about the relevant activities by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and strengthen two-ways information exchange between the organization and Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) on the way for the United Nations Summit of the Future in September 2024 as well as for the United Nations Ocean Conference in 2025.

On 28 May 2024, during the ITU WSIS High-level events the Global Cities Hub and WeGO will organize the Smart City Leaders’ Talks in Geneva. The event aims to discuss the main issues of people-centered and climate-resilient smart city development and the necessary future framework to channel the global multistakeholder discussion on this crucial topic.

On 18 April 2024, the Global Cities Hub was invited to take part in an expert roundtable on data planning and collection[1] by National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (NMIRFs)[2] in human rights area, with a special focus on the integration of local and regional governments (LRGs) and national statistical systems which operate with SDGs. The roundtable was organized by the Geneva Human Rights Platform (GHRP) and the Department of Legal Studies at the University of Bologna, supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

During the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council, we focused on supporting States on a Joint statement on local governments and human rights and on addressing critical issues for Local and Regional Governments (LRGs), such as the rights to adequate housing and to a healthy environment. Our aim was to amplify their voices in the main UN intergovernmental body for human rights.
