Description

Urban Forests in Action: Tools for National and Local Policy

This session, part of FOREST 2025, the 83rd Session of the UNECE Committee on Forests and the Forest Industry (COFFI), will explore how to systematically implement the San Marino Regional Urban Forestry Action Plan, which identifies how local and national governments can collaborate to plan, fund and sustainably manage urban trees and forests, with partners across society. The session focus will be on practical tools, policies, and funding models that align with national and international goals.

Currently, many ECE member States do not have a national urban forestry policy or budget, and urban forestry is often a local government competency. Furthermore, there has been an overall decline in urban forest cover in the ECE region over the past 30 years (UNECE, 2024).

The discussion will introduce key resources designed to promote more consistent and widespread action:

  • UNECE’s Quick Guide on Integrating Urban Forestry into National Policy: This guide (ECE/TIM/2025/7) helps countries without national urban forestry policies embed these solutions into their national frameworks.
  • UNECE’s Quick Guide on Urban Forestry as a Rio Convention Delivery Mechanism: This resource (ECE/TIM/2025/8) highlights how urban forestry can help meet commitments under international conventions.

Additionally, the new UNECE Urban Forest Compass (ECE/TIM/2025/6; ECE/TIM/2025/Inf.2) will be presented. This tool for standardizing data collection on urban forests will enable better monitoring, inform policies, and unlock results-based funding.

Hear from a diverse panel of experts from the worlds of science, policy, diplomacy, and finance as they share insights on what it takes to scale up this vital nature-based solution.

This interactive side event invites participants to explore Geneva’s urban forestry initiatives in the heart of the city. Beginning with a light breakfast at Villa Rigot, the group will embark on a guided walk through Parc Rigot, visiting a Miyawaki forest—a dense, biodiverse planting method that enhances urban resilience. The walk will continue to a second site showcasing a second planting site (not Miyawaki), where a representative of Canton Geneva will present on the Canton’s urban forestry strategy and ongoing efforts, followed by discussion.
