The Global Cities Hub celebrates 5 years of commitment to more inclusive and effective multilateralism

The Global Cities Hub (GCH) today marks five years of dedication to enhancing the recognition of cities and regions in global governance. Founded in 2020 by the City of Geneva, the Canton of Geneva, and the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the GCH has established itself as a key player in urban diplomacy in Geneva and beyond.

Since its inception, the GCH has facilitated connections between cities, regions and their networks with the International Geneva ecosystem, enabling them to participate in and contribute to discussions on global challenges such as sustainable development, climate change, digitalization, human rights and urban health.

Today, the GCH is a key partner of the UN Forum of Mayors, providing mayors with a unique international platform to discuss sustainable urban development and submit concrete recommendations to States. It has also played a vital role in integrating urban perspectives into various international processes, including those related to pandemic prevention, plastic pollution reduction or digitalization.

Over the past five years, the GCH has strengthened its network, collaborating with cities and regions worldwide, States, international organizations and major city networks. New members have joined the adventure, including Nairobi and Zurich.

Looking ahead, the GCH will pursue its mission to enhance the influence of cities on the international stage by facilitating their participation in strategic discussions on key topics such as human rights, health, climate, and sustainable development. It will continue developing reference tools for local governments, publishing policy papers on relevant issues for both cities, regions and the international community and advocating for a more inclusive and effective multilateral system.

In five years, the Global Cities Hub has become an essential actor in international dialogue on urban issues. We are proud of our achievements and remain convinced that cities play a crucial role in global governance. Our ambition is to build on this momentum and further anchor cities’ presence on the international stage,” stated the GCH Co-Directors, Kamelia Kemileva and Anh Thu Duong.
