The Global Cities Hub participated in the 7th session (8-12 December 2025) of the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) “Advancing sustainable solutions for a resilient planet”. Throughout UNEA, the GCH consistently highlighted the critical role of local and regional governments (LRGs) in addressing environmental challenges and accelerating climate action.

Following the opening remarks by Cristina Bueti of ITU and Graham Alabaster from UN-Habitat, the interventions explained the ongoing activities in three related workstreams – helping the audience discover how technological development, including the virtual worlds are transforming the way cities are designed, governed, and experienced. Cristina Bueti, Christina Yan Zhang and Okan Geray shared their vision on how public institutions may progress through their respective digital journeys.

UNEA-7 OFFICIAL SIDE EVENT | While cooling has become essential for urban adaptation, the integration of LRGs into international governance and implementation mechanisms remains limited. This session will bridge that gap, showcasing how local actors are already delivering solutions on the ground and why they must be fully included in UNEA-led processes.

The webinar “Co-governing the Citiverse” provides a virtual behind the scenes tour presenting different multilateral processes and their main outcomes. It offers a briefing on the outcomes of the “Citiverse Rising: Virtual Worlds and AI Agents for Urban Transformation” which took place on 4 November 2025 in the framework of the Smart City Expo World Congress and explains how LRGs can and why LRGs should participate more actively in different multistakeholder processes, and consider adequate steps.
