Global Cities Hub supports Joint contribution for INC5 on Plastic Pollution Treaty

The Global Cities Hub will participate in an upcoming webinar hosted by the Local and Subnational Governments Coalition for the Plastic Pollution Treaty (LSNG). This webinar, the second of its kind, (17th July 2023) aims at informing local and subnational governments on the activities of the Coalition and will feature the possibility to join as a member of the coalition (open to city and regional administrations). The webinar will take place on 17th September 2023, at two different times (10:00 CEST and 18:00 CEST) to accommodate participants from all regions of the world.

The webinar will focus on two major issues : a) the preparations for the forthcoming Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) meeting scheduled for 25th November – 1st December in Busan (South Korea) and b) will take stock of preparatory expert negotiations, to be held 24-28th August in Bangkok, Thailand. These preparatory negotiations will include:

  • Implementation Mechanisms – Discussing the potential frameworks and measures to ensure effective enforcement of the treaty provisions.
  • Funding and Resources – Exploring sustainable financial mechanisms to support treaty implementation and assist local governments in managing plastic pollution.

Local and subnational governments, including through our Coalition, have been actively contributing to the language and provisions of any negotiated draft texts leading towards the final treaty text, and they will continue to advocate for the inclusion of references to local and subnational governments. The Global Cities Hub, with its extensive diplomatic and negotiating experience, is eager to contribute to these efforts as part of the Coalition.
