Urbanization and climate change: what challenges for the countries from the “Global south”?

On 6 December, the Geneva Cities Hub has been invited to contribute to an event organized by Helvetas on “Urbanization and climate change: what challenges for the countries from the “Global south”?”.

As the world gets more urban, and in particular in the Global South, it is important to reflect upon the impact of rapid urbanization on the provision of public services, the environment, water and waste management in cities, access to adequate housing and to employment, etc. Cities, because of their environmental footprint, their capacity to innovate, their growing importance on the international stage, have become crucial actors to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs). How should they fight poverty and adapt to climate change? How to ensure that cities from the Global South become more sustainable and inclusive? What can development aid bring to this context? All those questions will be at the heart of the event.
