Current challenges to the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests
| Following the adoption of Resolution A/HRC/RES/56/10 on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of peaceful protests, the Permanent Missions of Costa Rica and Switzerland organize a side-event on the margins of the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council.
The resolution, adopted in 2024, calls on States to promote and protect the right to peacefully protest. The right to protest has key implications for local and regional governments (LRGs), as they are in charge of local law enforcement and must ensure the right to protest is protected while also ensuring the safety of residenty and protesters. How can States better promote and protect the right to peaceful protest? How can LRGs support States in ensuring that the Resolution is implemented on the ground? How can LRGs be included within the broader human rights system to ensure that international human rights committments are realized for all? |
