Building Peace through an Urban Lens
Join us for an insightful panel discussion titled Building Peace through an Urban Lens, organized by Global Cities Hub, during the upcoming Geneva Peace Week. Managing the social and political impact of rapid urbanization is a defining global challenge of the 21st century. As cities expand and new urban centres emerge, the dynamics of peacebuilding and conflict prevention increasingly involve urban spaces. Building peace in urban areas requires addressing critical issues such as security provision, human rights protection, post-conflict reconstruction and governance of marginalized communities that often lack access to basic public services and the rule of law, despite living in centres of economic and political life. We will also explore how illicit economies and organized crime intersect with urban security challenges and impact efforts to foster peace. Looking at rapid urbanisation, we will examine the roles of armed groups, urban governance, and the use of resources such as land in political violence. Additionally, the discussion will highlight innovative solutions that local governments and communities have found, showcasing how they can partner with national and international actors to address challenges and promote peace and urban resilience. The panel will address the broader role that cities and their leaders play in peacebuilding, the challenges faced by local actors in participating in these processes, and how local knowledge and expertise can contribute to conflict resolution efforts. It will also explore initiatives that foster social cohesion and ensure equitable access to basic public services in urban spaces, presenting creative ideas that can be replicated elsewhere.
