Description

ZERO WASTE UN DAY – Beat (Plastic) Pollution & more

What ? : BEAT Waste Pollution Now : Waste pollution endangers human health, harms environment, costs $361B in 2020 alone!

When ? In 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero. It follows other resolutions focused on waste, and namely the one initiating the #Plastic pollution treaty negotiation where the GCH is active from its beginning. Learn more about it

Who? The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) jointly facilitate the observance of #International Day of Zero Waste. States, local and regional governments and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national, subnational, regional and local levels.

Why? Promoting zero-waste initiatives through this International day can help advance all the goals and targets in the #2030Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Sustainable Development Goal 12. These goals address all forms of waste, including food loss and waste, natural resource extraction and electronic waste.

The #GCH is very much part of the move, as municipalities and other subnational governments handle the burden of waste management all over the globe!
