Negotiations towards a global treaty to end plastic pollution appear to be entering a decisive phase, as diplomatic meetings intensify and informal discussions (such as those to be held in Bangkok<\/a> next week) continue ahead of the next round of talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against this backdrop, the Coalition of Subnational Governments to End Plastic Pollution<\/strong>, bringing together more than 100 members, is also stepping up its engagement. While cities and regions are not formally represented as a distinct constituency in the negotiations, they can participate through national delegations \u2014 a practice already followed by some governments and that provides an important avenue for subnational engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coalition responded to H.E. Amb Julio Cordano\u2019s guiding questions by bringing its members experiences, priorities and perspectives into the discussion. See Coalition’s responses here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coalition encourages cities and regions to bring these responses to the attention of their respective National Focal Points, whose contacts can be found here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With cities and regions playing a central role in addressing plastic pollution on the ground, their contribution can help inform discussions on how a future global treaty can be effectively implemented across different levels of government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As negotiations move forward, the Coalition will continue to mobilize its members and advocate for the meaningful involvement of cities and regions in the development and implementation of a global agreement to end plastic pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Coalition of Subnational Governments to End Plastic Pollution<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Coalition brings together cities, regions and other subnational governments committed to ending plastic pollution and ensuring that the perspectives and experiences of local and regional governments are reflected in global efforts to address the plastic pollution crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
