{"id":16291,"date":"2022-03-18T13:48:51","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T12:48:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.genevacitieshub.org\/?p=16291"},"modified":"2022-03-18T13:48:54","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T12:48:54","slug":"engaging-subnational-governments-cities-and-other-local-authorities-on-biodiversity-matters-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/globalcitieshub.org\/en\/engaging-subnational-governments-cities-and-other-local-authorities-on-biodiversity-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Engaging subnational governments, cities and other local authorities on biodiversity matters"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the Geneva resumed meeting on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)&nbsp;<\/a>is ongoing,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iclei.org\/en\/Home.html?gclid=Cj0KCQjwuMuRBhCJARIsAHXdnqP3cXavOqZ2AYldckr8pmov9q8qGqsFC248U3FPfjT632m9isIQgusaAprjEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ICLEI<\/a>, a major city network involved closely in the negotiations, and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genevacitieshub.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geneva Cities Hub<\/a>, a platform fostering local and regional governments and their networks\u2019 participation in multilateral diplomacy, have organized an informal meeting today at the Villa Rigot to gain support for a proposed renewed decision&nbsp;of Decision X\/22. This Decision adopted in 2010, made the CBD the only multilateral environmental agreement with a consistent 10-year plan of action for engaging subnational governments, cities and other local authorities.&nbsp;The Edinburgh Process, of which ICLEI was a key partner, resulted in the Edinburgh Declaration. This Declaration expresses the ambitions of subnational governments&nbsp;and cities and calls for a renewed decision and plan of action. UK has supported this call and submitted a&nbsp;draft decision text and renewed plan of action as main co-sponsor, which has&nbsp;resulted in a draft recommendation&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbd.int\/meetings\/SBI-03\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CBD\/SBI\/3\/CRP.8<\/a>) .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ICLEI and the Geneva Cities Hub call upon parties&nbsp;to support the adoption of&nbsp;CBD\/SBI\/3\/CRP.8 as a result of this preparatory work. \u201c<em>We need the active participation and contributions of local and subnational governments to support State Parties in achieving successful implementation of the global and national biodiversity targets<\/em>\u201d, said Ingrid Coetzee, on behalf of ICLEI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>We&#8217;re glad that we provided space for relevant persons to meet (preferably in person!) and move things forward together.
