In only 5 years of existence, the Global Cities Hub (GCH) has positioned itself as the city diplomacy platform in International Geneva. In 2025, it worked to influence the narrative around the role of LRGs in global governance, convening events, inserting explicit references to LRGs and urban issues in UN decisions, and convincing states that giving LRGs a greater voice in international debates is essential.<\/p>

The 5th edition of the UN Forum of Mayors<\/a> (FoM), entitled \u201cCities Shaping the Future\u201d, remained a priority for the GCH. Taking place on October 6-7, 2025, in Geneva, the FoM was designed as a \u201cHigh-Level Political Forum\u201d for cities. It focused, from a local perspective, on the same SDGs previously examined by States at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York in July 2025. The 5th edition saw increased participation, with more than 80 cities and 50 mayors and deputy mayors.<\/p>

The GCH produced two policy papers on \u201cLocalizing Multilateralism: the role of LRGs in advancing human rights and the SDGs<\/a>\u201d and on \u201cStrengthening confidence in financing local climate-responsive projects<\/a>\u201d, as well as an article in the journal Paradiplomacia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2024, the GCH consolidated its role as a key platform for city engagement on the international stage. Building on its growing network and influence, the GCH promoted a multilateral system that is more inclusive vis-\u00e0-vis LRGs. In doing so, the GCH mainly focused on the international ecosystem in Geneva, given the diversity of its stakeholders and their capacity to evolve and innovate.<\/p>

At the end of 2024, the GCH adopted a new strategic framework (2025-2028)<\/a> to guide its work over the next 4 years, through 2028. This document provides GCH\u2019s partners with a clear blueprint about its vision, mission and values, along with its objectives and how to achieve them.\u00a0<\/p>

The 4th UN Forum of Mayors<\/a>, which took place on 30 September – 1 October in Geneva, constitutes a priority for the GCH. In 2024, it brought together more than 50 mayors from all over the world.\u00a0<\/p>

In 2023, the Global Cities Hub (GCH) changed its name (previously \u201cGeneva Cities Hub\u201d) to better reflect the fact that cities and regions were global players on the international stage and that the scope of GCH\u2019s work is global.<\/p>

Looking back at 2023, the GCH pursued its mission to better connect local and regional governments (LRGs) to the International Geneva ecosystem and to elevate the urban agenda. The year has been marked by the engagement of the GCH in six priority multilateral processes offering concrete entry points to LRGs: the 3rd\u00a0Forum of Mayors\u00a0<\/a>and its interregional segment organized in collaboration with all UN Regional Economic Commissions; the\u00a0Human Rights Council<\/a>\u00a0and its Universal Periodic Review; intergovernmental negotiations on a new treaty on pandemics within\u00a0WHO<\/a>, as well as on a new treaty on plastic pollution within\u00a0UNEP<\/a>; the issue of smart cities\u00a0at the World Summit on the Information Society and within ITU<\/a>\u00a0more broadly; and the Global Refugee Forum steered by\u00a0UNHCR<\/a>.<\/p>
